Comet Way Introduces Java Agent Kernel
From Press Reports
Comet Way, Inc., a software
firm specializing in agent software systems for networks, embedded
systems, and smart devices, announced this week the open source
release of its Java Agent Kernel (JAK) software system.
The new technology makes it easy to build sophisticated agent applications
for any Java enabled platform, from embedded Windows CE to clustered
UNIX servers.
The glut of new computing platforms creates special problems
and customer
expectations; the JAK technology makes these challenges manageable,
said
Damien Miller, Comet Ways CEO. We are releasing the
Comet Way JAK as open-source because doing so increases the value
of the products and
expertise that we currently offer our customers.
The JAK lets people build reusable and manageable software
for platforms
where traditional application servers and component models dont
work well,
like small footprint devices said Paul Cunningham, Comet Ways
CTO. When building software with the JAK, all parts of the
application are implemented as discrete agents. Each agent focuses
on performance of a specific task or domain. These reusable agent
modules are then combined into sophisticated software systems.
The Enterprise Java Bean (EJB) component model works for
large scale
database driven server applications, but it poses significant problems
when
building software for other platforms according to Cunningham.
The JAK
fills this gap with a component system that is highly portable,
configurable, intuitive and easy to use. JAK agents can run on KVMs
and PersonalJava, yet still integrate easily with beans and J2EE
applications on the server-side.
The JAK has been deployed on a wide variety of platforms and virtual
machines including Windows CE, Windows 2000, Linux, PocketLinux,
FreeBSD, Solaris, and MacOS. The release comes with a suite of useful
agents, including agents that handle HTTP and SMTP sessions. The
software is available from the Comet
Way Web site.
